Deemed dangerous, Valachi's autobiography was suppressed by the White House

Peter Maas
Though the Lyndon Johnson Administration initially endorsed a plan to publish Joseph Valachi’s autobiography, political pressures caused the administration to quickly reverse course and block publication. When journalist Peter Maas attempted to publicize the details of Valachi’s life story, the government sued to stop him...

Informer columnist composes first book

Justin Cascio, who regularly contributes "Mafia Genealogy" columns to Informer, is the author of the just released book, In Our Blood: The Mafia Families of Corleone. The book is available now through Amazon in hardcover, paperback and ebook editions (links below).

While the Mafia criminal society is traditionally viewed as a hierarchical organization, Cascio argues that Mafia networks are largely based on kinship ties.

Cascio, who publishes his own Mafia Genealogy website in addition to his frequent Informer contributions, devoted years of research into his first book-length project. He notes that pivotal figures in Mafia history, including present-day mafiosi, have direct genealogical ties to one another and to the earliest recorded gangs in Corleone, Sicily. In addition to bloodline and marriage connections, some mafiosi also linked through the significant religious/family role of godparent.

Cascio discusses dozens of gangland figures in the United States and Sicily as he analyzes family-based networks that include thousands of individuals. Along the way, he tackles some of the lingering questions about the Mafia: How old is the criminal society? Where was it formed? How did it spread from Sicily to the U.S.?

For the benefit of researchers, Cascio has provided references supporting his assertions. The hardcover and paperback editions of In Our Blood weigh in at 390 pages. The Kindle ebook is rated by Amazon at a print length of 532 pages.

Small price hike on book editions

Due to the KDP printing service's escalating costs for materials and labor, the list prices of Informer paperback (Oct 2020, Oct 2021 and Nov 2022 issues) and hardcover (Nov 2022 only) book editions recently increased slightly.

For example, the October 2022 "Mob in Youngstown" issue in paperback form was originally priced at $19.95 (U.S. dollars). After the price increase, it is now for sale at $20.20 (USD).

The pricing for Informer's magazine format and for electronic magazine and electronic book formats have been unaffected by this price increase.

Gentile’s memoirs: Vita di Capomafia

Gentile’s memoirs: Vita di Capomafia

By Thomas Hunt

"Two editions of Vita di Capomafia by Nick Gentile were published in Italy, but additional versions of the Gentile recollections were written. While each provided much of the same core material, there were some noteworthy differences. In this article, we will look at the versions of Gentile’s memoirs, their structural differences and their common themes. Portions of Gentile’s life story first reached the public through a series of articles written by left wing Italian journalist Felice Chilanti and published simultaneously in the Paese Sera newspaper in Rome and the L’Ora newspaper in Palermo, Sicily, in the autumn of 1963. Eight articles under the headline, 'Un mese dentro la mafia' (A month inside the Mafia) were published, every two to three days, between September 14 and October 1..."

Pellegrino Scaglia’s murder fractured Mafia

Gentile’s Pueblo connection

By Sam Carlino

"Nicola Gentile was a respected figure in the Onorata Società (Honored Society), commonly referred to as La Cosa Nostra or the Mafia. His book, Vita di Capomafia, was the first 'tell-all' written by a high-ranking member of the elusive secret society. In the volume, Gentile provided details about famous historical occurrences as well as many arcane events. He discussed the little known Pueblo Colorado Mafia. Gentile’s connection to Pueblo boss Pellegrino Scaglia effectively put Pueblo on the map of Mafia host cities. Recently discovered information about Gentile and the notorious Carlino brothers has been related in the book Colorado’s Carlino Brothers: A Bootlegging Empire..."

Secret societies: gang rule in New York

Giuseppe Masseria and Frankie Yale

By Jon Black

Excerpt from Secret Societies by Jon Black: "Salvatore D’Aquila, who took on the role of U.S. Mafia boss of bosses following Giuseppe Morello’s 1910 incarceration, was described as a cunning and authoritarian figure. His reign over the U.S. Mafia lasted until his murder in 1928, when he was replaced by Giuseppe Masseria. A Sicilian immigrant from western Sicily, Masseria arrived in Manhattan around 1900. He began his criminal career as a professional burglar. In 1907, twenty-one-year-old Masseria received a suspended sentence after breaking into an apartment on Elizabeth Street. Later that year, he was arrested and discharged after making Black Hand threats against his own family..."

November 2018 issue of Informer

November 2018 issue contents
Editorial

http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/1510369

Adhesive tape was a fairly recent invention when robbers began finding it especially handy in their field of endeavor. It was quicker and easier to bind and gag a victim with strips of the sticky material than with cloth or rope. And a roll of tape was far easier to carry around. Due to the novelty of this approach, newspapers dubbed groups that used it, “tape bandits.”

We learn in this issue’s feature by Jeffery S. King (Preview), that notorious gangster George “Baby Face” Nelson once led a group of these enterprising tape bandits.

Also in this issue:

  • Saving a person from the electric chair may not always be the same as saving the person’s “life.” Thomas Hunt’s article (Preview) reveals that one wrongly convicted man was emotionally destroyed despite Detective Joseph Petrosino’s heroic efforts to free him from Sing Sing’s Death House.
  • Did Albany’s powerful O’Connell Machine ensure the 1930s conviction and electrocution of widow Anna Antonio merely to shield local bootlegging and narcotics rackets? Ellen Poulsen considers the question (Preview).
  • Author Christian Cipollini reveals past, present and what might happen if he ever smiled for a photograph (Preview).
  • Richard N. Warner explores the unsolved murder of Chicago’s Sam Giancana (Preview).
  • Thomas Hunt ponders “Wherefore art thou, [Frank] Romeo?” (Preview).
  • Book reviews and announcements (Preview).

Sixty-eight pages.

Axeman, street gangs, Petrosino

"One of my favorite nutritional experts is a physician who goes over medical studies to explain what we now know about specific foods. In his videos he often lures the viewer in by first discussing studies that failed to address the most important questions '...until now.' In the crime history genre, we have often seen new books that are just rehashes of older ones ...until now..."

What's new in the Chicago Outfit?

By Richard N. Warner

"There have been a lot of changes in City of Big Shoulders over the past ten years. It was ten years ago that the devastatingly successful Family Secrets case took place.  A little over a decade ago, John 'No Nose' Di Fronzo was the 'boss of bosses' of the Syndicate, James 'Little Jimmy' Marcello was the day-to-day boss, and there were four or five operating street crews..."
